Cookie notice

As a part of our continuing commitment to consumer privacy, we recently introduced a “cookie notice” on our sites to notify any visitors about data collection and show them where they can view their rights in relation to that. Our message, however, was negatively impacting our mobile experience, so we’ve simplified it and moved it above the header to allow a better experience for visitors to sites.

Here are some of the specific updates that we made.

Improvements

  • The cookie notice has been moved to appear above the Header in mobile view.

  • The default cookie text has been updated. It now reads, "By continuing to use this website, you agree to our use of cookies to give you the best shopping experience. Privacy Policy." Toyota sites’ policy link reads “Terms and Conditions of Sale” at Toyota’s request.

  • The “Accept” button in the cookie notice has been removed in favor of an “X”.

  • The cookie notice has been formatted not to obstruct content in mobile.

  • The font size for the policies link in the cookie notice has been increased.

  • The cookie notice is now automatically disabled once visitors scroll past the first screen in mobile view.

  • The cookie notice is now automatically disabled for “googlebot” and “bingbot,” which will prevent the cookie notice text from appearing in Google and Bing search results. This both avoids visual problems for clients’ search results and prevents search engines from marking those results as spam.

  • Styling on the policies page has been updated to improve spacing.

  • Toyota and Lexus’ checkout policies have been updated to cover the cookie notice.

  • The cookie notice has been disabled for Canadian sites.

Fixes

  • The cookie notice was reappearing after being dismissed on a previous page on certain sites. It now dismisses correctly and does not return.

    • In a similar issue, the cookie message would not dismiss on some sites at all, but it works as expected now.

  • The cookie notice has been translated into French on French-language sites. Before, the English-language cookie notice was appearing.

  • Some BMW Canada sites had a large white box at the top of the page instead of the cookie notice. Now they don’t.

  • Some clients use banners to communicate certain events or sales on their sites. For a few sites with these banners, the cookie banner and site banner were overlapping. Both are visible now.

  • Nissan and INFINITI sites have two privacy policy links: one to the manufacturer policy and one to the dealer policy. Previously, Nissan and INFINITI sites had both policy links in the cookie notice. Now, the only link that appears is the dealer policy link.
